IPL 2017: Rohit Sharma fumes as wide controversy hits MI-RPS match

Wide controversy has hit IPL 2017 during Mumbai and Pune match. This angered Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma.

Mumbai, April 25: The standard of umpiring was back in focus as Mumbai Indians (MI) lost a close game against Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 last night (April 24). (Match scorecard)

Indian umpires have been under scrutiny since the start of the 10th edition of IPL. Yet again, an Indian umpire was in the middle of a wide controversy which left MI captain Rohit Sharma fuming at Wankhede Stadium on Monday night. (Match highlights)

MI needed 17 off the final over, bowled by left-arm paceman Jaydev Unadkat. He got the wicket of Hardik Pandya off the first delivery. The next ball went for a six from Rohit's bat.

11 runs were required off 3 and Rohit was on strike. The MI skipper shuffled across the off-stump and Unadkat spotted this and bowled the ball wider. The ball had gone past the wide guideline on the crease. However, umpire S Ravi did not call it a wide.

Rohit was clearly upset with this call. He walked straight to the umpire and had a heated conversation. Ravi's colleague Nand Kishore had to intervene. But Rohit (58) was left fuming. He was out the next ball, caught and bowled by Unadkat.

RPS batsman Ajinkya Rahane, in the post-match press conference, backed umpire Ravi's call. (Rohit reprimanded)

"I think it was the right call. As a batsman, when you move over to the off-side, the area outside off-side belongs to the bowler," he said.

On Rohit's on-field behaviour, Rahane explained, "It happens on the field and remains on the field. In this format, in close games, this will happen in the future as well. You should respect the umpire's decision as well as whatever Rohit did that was completely natural."

Rohit's team-mate Harbhajan said he was not sure whether it was wide or not.

"He didn't shout at the umpire or ask why it wasn't given a wide. He just wanted to know where he should stand for the wide to be called and he was told that the amount he moves is the amount of margin the bowler gets," Harbhajan said.

"I don't really know if it was actually a wide ball or notd. I feel if both the legs of the batsmen move across the stumps, then the bowler should get the (benefit of the) margin. But, if you see, only one leg of the batsman went across, so I feel it should have been a wide. But, in the end, whatever is the umpire's decision we have to move on with it," he added.

Earlier in the tournament, Rohit had been reprimanded by the match referee for showing dissent to an LBW decision.
