IPL 2017: No Chennai Super Kings but there is TV commentary in Tamil for fans

Chennai Super Kings are not part of IPL 2017 but fans from Tamil Nadu can listen to commentary in Tamil on ESPN.

Chennai, March 24: Cricket fans in Tamil Nadu will have the opportunity to watch the IPL 2017 matches with commentary in Tamil on ESPN and ESPN HD channels.

Full schedule of IPL

Former Indian cricketers from the city - Sadagoppan Ramesh, Hemang Badani and VB Chandrasekhar would be among the Tamil commentators for the T20 tournament, Sony Pictures Networks India's EVP and business head - sports clusters, Prasana Krishnan, told reporters here today (March 24).

Though the regional language commentary for the Indian Premier League had been offered for the past two years, it was being made available on the ESPN platform this time, he said.

He further said commentary in the local language had helped the TV network to connect with the regional audiences (which also includes Telugu and Bengali).

Krishnan said despite Chennai missing out on hosting matches, the Tamil Nadu market was number three in terms of viewership numbers for 2016. He said Sony Pictures had garnered 361 million viewers in the ninth edition of IPL and expressed hope it would show an upward graph this year too.

Also, he said Sony Pictures had come up with a new ad campaign aimed at the regional markets.

IPL 2017 begins on April 5 in Hyderabad. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are not part of this year's tournament as they are serving a two-year ban for corruption.
