IPL 2017: 10 highest team totals in the history of the IPL

As Indian Premier League enters its tenth year we look at the 10 highest team totals in the history of the IPL.

New Delhi, April 25: Twenty20 cricket has been enjoyed by fans because this format guarantees explosive batting and stroke plays from the batsmen.

A major reason for T20 cricket to gain popularity in such a short span of time is for the simple fact that the batsmen have plundered the bowlers for huge sixes and fours.

IPL 2017: 10 highest team totals in the history of the IPL

The shortest format of the game is known for huge team totals, big sixes and boundaries.

Indian Premier League, in its history of 10 years, has witnessed some power hittings from the batsmen as big total have been posted by teams from time to time.

There have been several instances when teams scored 200+ scores in the IPL and made a mockery of the opposition bowlers. Sometimes, a batsman single attacked the bowler while on other occasions it was a team effort which took the teams to big totals.


As IPL enters its 10th year, we look at the 10 highest team totals in the history of the league (as on April 24, 2017)

1. Royal Challengers Bangalore 263/5 Vs Pune Warriors India on April 23, 2013

Chris Gayle top scored by posting 175 runs in this game, which is still the highest individual total in the IPL. He slammed the fastest IPL century, off 30 deliveries, against Pune Warriors India, now defunct.

Result: RCB won by 130 runs


2. RCB 248/3 Vs Gujarat Lions on May 14, 2016

Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers struck centuries as RCB posted 248/3 in 20 overs against Gujarat Lions at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium

Result: RCB won by 144 runs


3. Chennai Super Kings 246/5 Vs Rajasthan Royals on April 3, 2010

Murali Vijay slammed brilliant 127 against Rajasthan Royals as Chennai Super Kings plundered 155 in the last ten overs to post a huge 246/5.

Naman Ojha and Shane Watson set the tone for a remarkable run chase but Doug Bollinger's 2/15 ensured CSK remain on the winning side.

The score remained the highest score in the IPL history till 'Gayle storm' prevailed over Chinnaswamy Stadium on April 24, 2014.

Result: CSK won the match by 27 runs


4. Chennai Super Kings 240/5 Vs Kings XI Punjab, Mohali on 19 April, 2008

It was just the second match of the Indian Premier League when Michael Hussey slammed the second ton of the tournament and helped the MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings post 240 for the loss of five wickets against Kings XI Punjab.

In response, Kings XI Punjab could only manage to score 207/4.

Result: CSK won the match by 33 runs


5. RCB 235/1 Vs Mumbai Indians, on 10 May, 2015

The record 215-run unbeaten partnership between Virat Kohli (82 off 50 deliveries) and AB de Villiers (133* of 59 deliveries) for the first wicket helped RCB post 235/1 against Mumbai Indians.

In response, MI scored 196 for the loss of seven wickets in the run chase.

Result: RCB won the match by 39 runs


6. Kings XI Punjab 232/2 Vs RCB on May 17, 2011

Adam Gilchrist led from the front and slammed 106 off 55 balls. His century knock comprised 9 sixes and 4 fours as KXIP scored 232/2 in the 20 overs in Dharamsala on May 17, 2011.

In response, the RCB side were bundled out for 121 in 17 overs and lost the match by 111 runs.

Result: KXIP beat RCB by 111 runs


7. KXIP 231/4 Vs Chennai Super Kings on May 7, 2014

Glenn Maxwell played a knock of 90 off 38 balls as Kings XI Punjab posted a total of 231/4 against Chennai Super Kings in Cuttack on May 7, 2014.

Chasing a daunting target of 232, Chennai could only manage to score 187 for the loss of six wickets.

Result: Kings XI Punjab won the match by 44 runs


8. Delhi Daredevils 231/4 Vs KXIP on April 23, 2011

Riding over half-centuries from openers David Warner and Virender Sehwag, Delhi Daredevils posted a total of 231/4 against Kings XI Punjab in Delhi on April 23, 2011.

KXIP set up a marvellous run chase, thanks to the heroics of Shaun Marsh's 95, but could only manage to score 202/6 in the 20 overs.

Result: Delhi won by 29 runs


9. RCB 227/4 Vs Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 12, 2016

AB de Villiers (82) and Virat Kohli (75) stitched a partnership of 157 runs for the second wicket as RCB posted 227/4 against Sunrisers Hyderabad on April 12, 2016.

In response, David Warner top scored 58 but Sunrisers Hyderabad managed to score 182/6 in 20 overs.

Result: RCB won by 45 runs


10. RCB 226/3 Vs Kings XI Punjab on May 6, 2015

Chris Gayle fired 117 off 57 balls as RCB scored 226/3 in 20 overs on May 6, 2015 at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. RCB then bundled KXIP out for 88 and won the match by 138 runs.

Mitchell Starc and Sreenath Aravind grabbed four wickets apiece and ensured a thumping victory for the RCB.

Result: RCB won by 138 runs


10. KXIP 226/6 Vs Chennai Super Kings on May 30, 2014

Virender Sehwag plundered 122 in 58 deliveries in the 2nd qualifier and took Kings XI Punjab to 226 for the loss of 6 wickets against Chennai Super Kings on May 30, 2014.

Chennai batters put up a great fight in the run chase and scored 202 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. Punjab won the match by 24 runs and entered the finals.

Result: KXIP won by 24 runs
