Bengaluru, May 6: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) decimated a hapless Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) by 138 runs to register their fifth victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2015. After setting a target of 227 on a batting wicket at M Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Wednesday night, the RCB bundled out the Kings XI for just 88.
The win took them to the third position in the table with 11 points. Defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders also have 11 points but are behind the Royal Challengers on run-rate.
The Kings, last year's runners-up, are having a horrible run in this edition and this loss dashed all their hopes of making the last four.
Mitchell Starc & Sreenath Arvind destroy Kings XI
Mitchell Staec, who is having a fantastic tournament after joining it late because of an injury, grabbed 4 wickets for 11 runs to send the Kings packing. Sreenath Arvind also took 4 wickets. For the Kings, only resistance came from Axar Patel who remained unbeaten on 40 (5X4s, 2X6s)
Man of the match Chris Gayle smashes 117 off 57 balls
Earlier, RCB opener Chris Gayle blasted 117 in just 57 balls against a hapless Kings XI bowling attack after the visitors won the toss and elected to bowl.
The Caribbean left-hander hit 12 sixes and 7 fours in his innings and it was only a superb reflex catch by Axar Patel that saw him return to the pavilion. Gayle's 117 was the second ton of this edition of the IPL after Chennai Super Kings' Brendon McCullum. Gayle was adjudged the man of the match.
It was on this ground that Gayle had slammed an unbeaten 175 off 66 balls against the Pune Warriors in the 2013 edition.
Gayle & Kohli gave the RCB a flying start
