The Baroda all-rounder who made his debut for India in the limited overs last year, had to wait for the Test debut despite being part of the squad for quite some times.

The 24-year-old received his Test cap from skipper Virat Kohli ahead of the match against Sri Lanka. He will be acting as a third seamer and a lower-order batsman in his first Test.

In an interview to the broadcasters on the morning of the second day, an elated Hardik said he's very proud of his achievement.

"When I started playing cricket, I wanted to play Test cricket and when I got to know yesterday, I was very proud. No nerves. That's the good thing about me, I don't take unnecessary pressure. I was trying to keep calm and focus on my processes."

When asked about sharing the news with his elder brother Krunal Pandya, who is also a cricketer, Hardik said,"We're always in touch. There's not a day when we don't talk, and we always make sure to help each other."

When the Baroda all-rounder was asked about his preparations for the match, he said, "The wicket looks pretty flat here, pretty good to bat on, Ajinkya (Rahane) and (Cheteshwar) Pujara are doing really well and hopefully we can get 600-something. On bowling, its all about being consistent, because being the fifth bowler, the batsmen will come hard at me, and that way I want to take their wickets."

With Pujara (153) and Rahane (57) back into the pavilion early on day two, there are optimum chances for the all-rounder to come out and flex his muscle with the bat as well.

India scored 399/3 on the first day of the opening Test. Opener Shikhar Dhawan (190) and Pujara (144*) slammed brilliant tons to bring the visitors in commanding position.
