Mumbai, Dec 8: In what could be termed a unpleasant scenes, umpire Paul Reiffel was taken out of the field after getting hit by the ball in his head during the fourth Test match between India and England at Wankhede Stadium on Thursday (December 8).
The 50-year-old umpire from Australia was hit in the head from behind as he came in line of the ball thrown by Bhuvneshwar Kumar in the deep.
England's physio immediately rushed into the field to attend Reiffel who was later taken out of the ground for further treatment. A head scan would be conducted to check if there's anything serious.
Meanwhile, third umpire Marais Erasmus came out into the middle to replace Reiffel. 52-year-old Erasmus, who hails from South Africa, has officiated in 67 Test matches as umpire and TV umpire.
Reiffel on the other hand has officiated in total 44 Test matches.
India and England are playing the fourth match of the 5-Test series, here at Mumbai's Wankhede Cricket Stadium on Thursday.
Earlier, England skipper Alastair Cook won the toss and elected to bat first against Indian in the fourth Test match here at MCA's Wankhede Stadium.
India will have to come out to bowl first and bat in the fourth innings which is a challenging task here at Wankhede.
Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has replaced injured Mohammed Shami while opener KL Rahul returns to the side in place of middle order batsman Ajinkya Rahane.
This is the first time when no Mumbai player is featuring into the Indian side in Mumbai.
