Breaks Kapil Dev's record:
With 24-five-wicket-hauls in Test cricket, Ashwin surpassed former India captain Kapil Dev's record of 23 fifers.
Ashwin equaled Kapil's record in first innings and surpassed latter in the second innings.
Seventh 10-wicket-haul in Test:
71 Test wickets in 2016:
The Tamil Nadu spinner has scalped 71 wickets in 11 matches played this year. He had claimed 62 wickets last year.
He's now only behind Anil Kumble (74, in 2004) and Kapil Dev (74, 75 in 1979 and 1983, respectively) to become highest wicket-taker in year for the country.
Given the kind of form he's in and the added advantage of playing on his home turf at Chennai in the fifth and final Test, Ashwin has an opportunity to break those records.
Best performance by a spinner in a calendar year at home:
With 53 wickets in 11 Tests in India in 2016, Ashwin also produced the best performance by any Indian spinner in a calendar year at home.
Erapalli Prasanna had claimed 46 wickets in 1969.
Performance with bat:
Ashwin is only the second Indian player after Kapil to aggregate 500 plus runs and take more than 50 wickets in Tests in a year.
Kapil did it twice in 1979 (619 runs, 74 wickets) and 1983 (579 runs, 75 wickets).
