India-Pakistan bilateral series not possible under current circumstances: MHA

MHA Hansraj Ahir has claimed that cricket diplomacy between India and Pakistan is not possible under present circumstances.

New Delhi, March 29: Clearing the air over possible bilateral series between India and Pakistan, the Minister of State for Home Affairs (MHA) Hansraj Ahir has claimed that cricket diplomacy isn't possible between the two countries in current circumstances.

Ahir told reporters outside the Parliament on Wednesday (March 29), "In the current circumstances cricket between India and Pakistan is not possible."

MHA has however said that the final decision on this issue rests with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) since it involves a match outside India.

MHA also seems to have quashed the media reports, doing the rounds, that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has sought the clearance of the Government of India to play against the neighbouring country.

Earlier, in the day reports claimed that BCCI has sent a mail from last month asking for the government's stand on playing a cricket series against Pakistan.

Acting BCCI chief CK Khanna, was quoted by Network 18 as saying, "A letter was sent to the home ministry a month back and we are awaiting clearance for a series this winter. It is a clear case of trying to honour the commitment we had made to the PCB back in 2014. We will discuss the venue and other factors regarding the series once we meet in the Capital on April 9 during the SGM."

India and Pakistan meet each other in ICC events or in Asia Cup games ever since the bilateral relations between the two countries were affected due to terrorist activities and cross-border tensions.

Earlier, former BCCI chief Anurag Thakur had claimed that there would be no cricketing activity between the two countries till the cross-border tension ended.

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been accusing the BCCI of deliberating cancelling the bilateral series between the two teams which has caused huge monetary losses to the former.

India and Pakistan played a full-fledged series way back in 2007 when Pakistan toured India. The cricketing ties between the neighbouring countries came to a halt after Mumbai Terror attack in 2008.

The two teams played three ODIs and two T20Is when Pakistan toured India in December 2012. Pakistan won the ODI series 2-1 while T20I series was drawn 1-1.
