Kohli, who is nursing a shoulder injury, which he sustained during the previous Test in Ranchi, could not pass the fitness Test head of the game today at HPCA Stadium.

India's batting coach Sanjay Bangar confirmed that Kohli is not fully fit and has to miss out. The hosts replaced Kohli with a bowler, handing Test debut to left-arm chinaman bowler Kuldeep Yadav.

"Obviously if I am 100 per cent fit for the game (that) is the only condition on which I will take the field," Kohli had said yesterday.

"The physio can explain better (the risks of playing despite carrying an injury). I don't know the magnitude of the risk but all I know is the fitness tests, if I go through them I will take the field," he added.

In Kohli's absence, Ajinkya Rahane will captain India in the series decider. The score is level at 1-1.
