I am the president of the JKCA and continue to be so: Farooq Abdullah

By Ians English

Srinagar, July 21: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah on Tuesday insisted that he remained the president of the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association (JKCA).

Describing the JKCA meeting held here on Monday that ousted him as "illegal and a criminal trespass", he told the media: "I am the president of the JKCA and continue to be so."

I am still JKCA president: Abdullah

Abdullah distributed copies of a criminal complaint filed by him on Monday.

It said that some people, including Mehboob Iqbal, who was on Monday elected the JKCA chairman, ransacked the JKCA office at Sonawar after breaking open the locks.

"They trespassed and illegally removed some documents pertaining to the JKCA of which the elected office bearers are the legal custodians," the complaint said.

He said the police had not lodged a first information report (FIR), and quoted a police officer as saying that he would speak to his seniors before lodging the FIR.

The National Conference leader said the court had stayed Monday's JKCA proceedings, adding that he was sure "the so-called election (of Monday) will not stand judicial scrutiny".

The JKCA on Monday held elections in which 42 of the 64 clubs of the state took part. State Sports Minister Imran Raza Ansari was elected the new president replacing Abdullah.

Magistrate Amarjit Singh Langeh stayed the proceedings of the JKCA executive till July 31, the next date of hearing fixed for the suit filed by Abdullah.
