Full list of India's Test captains after Ajinkya Rahane joins list at 33rd

Ajinkya Rahane today (March 25) became India's 33rd Test captain as he led the side in Virat Kohli's absence in Dharamsala.

Dharamsala, March 25: Middle order batsman Ajinkya Rahane today (March 25) became India's 33rd Test captain as Virat Kohli was ruled out of the match against Australia here.

Day 1 report; Kohli misses out

At the HPCA Stadium on Saturday, Kohli could not take the field due to a shoulder injury which he sustained in the previous Test in Ranchi. Dharamsala was hosting its first ever Test today.

Ajinkya Rahane

In Kohli's absence, Rahane was handed the reins, for the first time. The Mumbai right-hander had previously not captained any side in a first-class match.

Rahane is the 33rd Test captain from India. Country's first ever skipper in the five-day format was CK Nayudu in 1932.

Rahane is the first Test captain from Mumbai since Sachin Tendulkar. Polly Umrigar, Nari Contractor, GS Ramchand, Ajit Wadekar, Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar and Ravi Shastri are the other captains from Mumbai.
