Though, the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain was not directly involved in the match but his calming influence helped a KKR player to win them the match.
Dhoni's influence was on Suryakumar Yadav, the KKR batsman, who smashed a crucial 20-ball 46 not out to take his team to a 7-wicket victory at Eden Gardens on Wednesday night (April 8).
After finishing the game, Yadav revealed how he was inspired by two individuals - one being his captain Gautam Gambhir and the other - Dhoni. The right-handed batsman remained calm in the run chase of 169 and delivered a win for KKR.
Speaking about his match-winning knock, Yadav told IPL's official website that he had learnt from Gambhir and Dhoni about how to remain calm under pressure.
"When it comes to calmness I look up to our captain Gautam Gambhir. Whenever he has been under pressure, he has always come up with stellar performances," he told IPLT20.com.
"He is the one who I have been watching over the last year. He takes his time at the start of the innings while batting but in the end he makes it count and makes sure that the team is on the positive side. Also, Gambhir is someone who is never satisfied with his performance. He always wants more which is something I am trying to learn from him," he added.
"Secondly I look up to MS Dhoni. Whenever he has won games for India or the Chennai Super Kings, he has been very calm. These are two individuals I look up to when it comes to calmness. They both are very quiet. They talk to themselves and they know they are going to get the job done for their team. That is the confidence I like in both of them," the 24-year-old from Mumbai said.
Yesterday's win was the 10th in a row for KKR. The defending champions will next host Royal Challengers Bangalore on Saturday (April 11).
