Bedi questions Dhoni, says Rayudu has 'highly suspect action'

Bengaluru, June 25: Former India captain and spin great Bishan Singh Bedi has described Ambati Rayudu's bowling action as "highly suspect" and questioned MS Dhoni's move to bowl him in the 3rd ODI against Bangladesh yesterday (June 24).

With Bangladesh 9 wickets down while chasing 318 at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium, Dhoni surprised all by throwing the ball to Rayudu.

The captain's decision was vindicated when he struck (Mustafizur Rahman LBW) on the last ball of his second over to signal the end of the match and victory for India by 77 runs. Rayudu finished with 1/5 in 2 overs with 1 maiden. But Bedi was not impressed by this.

It was a surprise move by Dhoni to bring on Rayudu for this off-spin as still overs were left with frontline bowlers. R Ashwin was the only bowler who completed his quota of 10 with 2/35.

The 29-year-old Rayudu is not a regular bowler. He has bowled only 108 balls in his 29 ODIs, taking 3 wickets.

In recent times, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has clamped down on illegal bowling actions. And Bedi lauded the worlds' governing body for that.

Bedi took to Twitter to ask why Rayudu was called to bowl. "Could not figure out the need to have highly suspect bowling action of Rayudu to finish off Bangladesh last night?! When do specialist bowlers get their due?," the former left-arm spinner asked.

Dhoni is a man who goes by his instinct and it was one of those days when he felt the need of giving the white ball to Rayudu when the game was all but sealed.
