Thakur, who also happens to be a Member of Parliament, was commissioned into the Territorial Army as a Lieutenant by Chief of Army Staff General Dalbir Singh Suhag at New Delhi's South Block on Friday (July 29).
"I will continue to serve the people by being their voice in Parliament & serve my country as a Lieutenant in the Territorial Army," Thakur tweeted.
Thakur's father Prem Kumar Dhumal, former chief minister of Himachal Pradesh, and his family members were also present during the commissioning.
Thakur, thus, has joined the elite group of India's limited overs' skipper MS Dhoni and former captain Kapil Dev who are also part of the Territorial Army.
The Territorial Army comprises volunteers who receive military training for a short span of time in a year so that they can be mobilised for the defence of the country, in case of an emergency.
