Australia captain Steve Smith sledges India debutant Barinder Sran

Perth, Jan 13: India's young left-arm fast bowler Barinder Sran got the taste of sledging in his very first international match yesterday (January 12) as Australian captain Steve Smith targeted him.

The 23-year-old Sran made his India debut during the 1st ODI at the WACA ground on Tuesday. He impressed in his first outing taking 3 wickets, but Australians, as they are known to be, did not spare the rookie quick.

Sran had rattled the Australians at 2/21, by picking up both openers Aaron Finch (8) and David Warner (5) as they chased 310. After bowling 6 overs in his fruitful first spell (2/29), Sran was kept away from bowling duties by captain MS Dhoni till the 40th over. (Rohit sets records)

By the time Sran returned for his second spell, Smith and George Bailey had settled having both scored centuries. And a confident Smith picked on Sran.

In the 45th over, with the game almost sealed in favour of the hosts, Smith was delivered a bouncer by Sran and the skipper had few words to say. And when the right-hand batsman put Sran away for a boundary in the same over, the lip service increased.

Smith seemed to be advising his former team-mate at Indian Premier League (IPL) on how to bowl! Sran preferred to be quiet rather than respond to the batsman. (Who is Sran?)

Sran had the last laugh in the battle of words as he dismissed Smith (149) in the final over of the match. However, Smith had done enough damage by then and Australia were needing just 2 to win. And the hosts won with 5 wickets and 4 balls to spare.

Smith and Sran were with Rajasthan Royals (RR) in IPL last year. Sran made his IPL debut last season. However, both Smith and Sran will not be at RR this year as the team is suspended for 2 years due to corruption.

Before the start of the 5-match ODI series, Smith had praised Sran after having watched him closely at IPL.

Smith will ply his trade at new franchise Pune while Sran will be in the Players Auction to be held next month in Bengaluru.
