AB de Villiers breaks Sourav Ganguly's record, completes 9000 ODI runs

South Africa captain and aggressive batsman AB de Villiers surpassed former India skipper Sourav Ganguly's record and became the fastest cricketer to complete 9,000 ODI runs.

New Delhi, Feb 26: South Africa captain and aggressive batsman AB de Villiers surpassed former India skipper Sourav Ganguly's record to become the fastest cricketer to complete 9,000 one-day international runs during the third ODI against New Zealand in Wellington, on Saturday (Feb 25).

De Villiers became the 18th player and second South African after Jacques Kallis to reach the 9,000 mark.

De Villiers, however, has the highest average of 53.86 and possesses the best strike-rate -- an incredible 99.94.

The South African batsman touched the milestone with a pull shot for boundary from Lockie Ferguson.

The 33-year-old took just 205 innings to touch the milestone, record 23 innings less than Ganguly - who took 228 innings to reach 9,000 runs.

South Africa defeated New Zealand by 159 runs in the third ODI. Chasing a target of 271 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 50 overs New Zealand were bundled out at 112.

De Villiers began the tour of New Zealand and required 87 runs to hit the 9,000-run mark and put together an unbeaten 37 in the series opener in Hamilton, hitting the winning runs to take his side to a one-nil lead.

India's current skipper Virat Kohli has a ODI run-tally of 7,755 from 171 innings, as he requires to score 245 runs in his next 10 innings to break the current 8,000 run mark of 182 inning.

The record his presently held by Kohli's idol and Royal Challengers Bangalore teammate De Villiers.

Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar has the most ODI runs with 18,426 at an average of 44.83 with a strike rate of 86.23.
