3rd ODI: MS Dhoni breaks Sachin Tendulkar's record in Mohali

Mohali, Oct 24: India's limited overs captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has broken batting legend Sachin Tendulkar's record during the 3rd ODI against New Zealand here last night (October 23).

Dhoni scored 80 and vice-captain Virat Kohli stroked a brilliant 154 not out as India defeated New Zealand by 7 wickets to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.

With 196 sixes from 281 matches, Dhoni is the Indian record holder for most sixes in ODIs. Tendulkar held it with 195 hits over the fence.

In the all-time six-hitters list, Pakistan's Shahid Afridi is way ahead with 351. Sri Lanka's Sanath Jayasuriya is second with 270 followed by West Indies' batsman Chris Gayle (238). New Zealand's Brendon McCullum is at 4th with 200. Dhoni is 5th.

Also during his knock at IS Bindra Stadium yesterday, Dhoni completed 9,000 runs in ODIs. He is the 5th Indian to the milestone after Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Mohammad Azharuddin.

The most famous six from Dhoni's bat came in the final of the 2011 World Cup at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium against Sri Lanka. Dhoni's six off Nuwan Kulasekara gave India the victory and the World Cup trophy on April 2, 2011.
