Bengaluru, Jan 17: India will take on arch-rivals Pakistan in their opening match of the ICC World Cup 2015 in Adelaide on February 15. This will be the second time the two teams will meet in Australia in a World Cup encounter. [1992 WC video: When commentator called him 'Sukin' Tendulkar at Dunedin]
Twenty-three years ago, India and Pakistan played at the Sydney Cricket Ground in which Mohammad Azharuddin's side won by 43 runs [See scorecard]. Though the loss did not stop Imran Khan's side to go on and lift its maiden World Cup title. [See full itinerary of 2015 WC]
Going back to that match played under the lights, while Sachin Tendulkar's unbeaten 54 off 62 balls was the main attraction during India's batting, it was the mercurial Javed Miandad who stole the show in the second half. [Indian squad for 2015 WC announced]
Chasing 217 in 49 overs (the match was curtailed by an over because of Pakistani bowlers slow over rate), Pakistan were 85 for 2 in the 25th over when suddenly Miandad, the batsman on strike, became upset with Indian wicket-keeper Kiran More.
As Sachin Tendulkar ran in to bowl a delivery, Miandad withdrew from his stance and gave a glare to More and asked him something with the diminutive wicket-keeper in non mood to apologise. Miandad then complained to the umpire with More retorting with a defensive gesture.
Miandad pushed the next ball from Tendulkar towards mid-off and set off for a run only to dash back to the crease. The throw came in to the wicket-keeper and he removed the bails with the Pakistani batsman well inside the crease.
Miandad was not amused and he started making peculiar leaps with the bat held in two hands that became symbolic with Indo-Pak rivalry in the World Cup. He was apparently mimicking the Indian wicket-keeper.
Indian skipper Azharuddin was left fuming at Miandad's on-pitch antics.
Miandad toiled hard to gather 40 runs from 110 deliveries with just two boundaries and Pakistan were all out for 173.
