Pallekele (Sri Lanka), Sep 6: Opener Glenn Maxwell blasted a 65-ball 145 not out to help Australia to a world record 263/3 in 20 overs in their 1st Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka here tonight (September 6). Australia won the match by 85 runs.
Maxwell smashed 9 sixes and 14 fours in his brilliant knock. Thanks to his superlative innings, Australia posted the highest ever T20I score.
This is now the joint highest total in T20 cricket, equalling Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) 263/5 against Pune Warriors in Indian Premier League (IPL) in Bengaluru in 2013. In that game, Chris Gayle had hit 175 not out.
Australia broke Sri Lanka's 9-year-old record. The Islanders held the record after their 260/6 against Kenya in Johannesburg in 2007.
The 27-year-old Maxwell, promoted to open the batting, brought up his century in just 49 balls. Maxwell's score is the second highest in T20Is, behind compatriot Aaron Finch's 156.
It has been a tough time for bowlers in international cricket. Exactly a week ago (August 30), England posted a world record One Day International score of 444/3 in 50 overs against Pakistan.
