Gurugram, Feb 3: Even at the age of 39 Anindita Chakraborty won all her matches in the team event to play a key role in Bengal’s women’s triumph in senior national table tennis championship on Thursday (Feb 2) in Gurugram.

Interestingly, Bengal women clinched the title after a span of 23 years and Anindita was also one of the proud members in the title winning team way back in 1994.

Anindita was one of the most popular women table tennis players in her time. Playing alongside Mantu Ghosh who has now been a table tennis administrator, Anindita, after winning the championship from Gurugram, said, “I wanted to say good bye to the game long time ago. But my 11-year old daughter does not want me to quit. She continuously inspires me to keep on playing. That is why I am still going at this age.”

At the same time, Anindita revealed that she enjoyed playing with her team mates who are almost half compared to her age.

Anindita added, “At first, my selection in the team raised a lot of questions as how could I get into the team despite being one of the selectors. So, from that point of view this triumph is a huge satisfaction for me. Secondly, the title this time gave me another boost that even at this age, I am being able to defeat opponents who are half my age and who are fitter than me. This apart, I feel the title, this time, has been extremely important for one of our leading players Sutirtha Mukherjee. She made a great comeback.”

Incidentally Sutirtha Mukherjee was suspended from the last season. Anindita, however, quipped, “The title in 1994 was equally pleasing as we won that time after a long time.”
