WC 2014: When Germany's Thomas Muller praised India

Bangalore, June 17: Germany's star player Thomas Muller who was one of top scores in the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and also scored the first hat-trick of the 2014 edition in Brazil, had come to India in January 2009 with his team Bayern Munich. He had gone to Kolkata and Siliguri and his team had beaten a Siliguri XI by half a dozen during that trip.

Muller had spoken highly about the trip later and even acknowledged India's rich exploits in sports like cricket and hockey.

He also said then that his club would take an initiative to encourage football in India and asked one could imagine what it would be like if a nation of 1.2 billion people became obsessed with the game.

Muller said he knew the kind of adulation Baichung Bhutia, the former ace footballer enjoyed and also expressed sympathy for the people of his home state Sikkim, which was hit by an earthquake.

Muller, who scored five goals in the 2010 tournament, began his 2014 campaign in a magnificent manner by netting three against Portugal.
