Sai Reddy, 51, who was working with Hindi media,was attacked by a group of men with sharp weapons when he was on his way to a weekly market in Basaguda village, close to his house. He was rushed to the district headquarters of Bijapur but he died on the way to the hospital.
Superintendent of Police of Bijapur, Prashant Agrawal, said police suspects Maoists' hands in the attack.
In 2008, Mr Reddy was arrested by the State Police and charged under the Special Public Security Act of Chhattisgarh for his alleged links with the Maoists. Later he was released on bail.
Reddy was regarded as one of the most prominent journalists of the region. He dealt thoroughly with the issues and problems of Bastar division.
