"Nitish is behaving like a dictator by directing the police to book people on a mass scale under section 107 of the CrPC to prevent any untoward incident during the festive season," BJP vice-president C P Thakur told reporters.
"What should people do during festivals?.... does the government want people to stay home and celebrate?" he asked.
"It is only under a dictatorial regime that people are restrained from exercising freedom of movement," Thakur said, adding this was the first time he was seeing such draconian restriction on people's movement.
"Nitish is behaving like a dictator by directing the police to book people."
The senior BJP leader demanded that section 107 of the CrPC should be scrapped as it breached the democratic rights of the people.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar had held a meeting with senior officials last week and directed them to take strict actions against those vitiating peaceful atmosphere during the festival season.
