Laxity not to be tolerated, Bihar CM warns police officers

Patna, Aug 7: Under attack from the opposition parties over the 'deteriorating' law and order situation in the state, Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi on Thursday warned police officials that any laxity in crime control at any level would not be tolerated.

Holding a high-level review meeting on law and order, Manjhi said, "We will not tolerate any kind of laxity in crime control, as well as, law and order situation at any level."

The chief minister also called for performance and result in this regard from the police.

"We want results in crime control and law and order. If the situation is improving, it should reflect in the public perception also. The criminals should fear the police and the administration," Manjhi said at the meeting attended by Finance Minister Bijendra Prasad Yadav, Chief Secretary Anjani Kumar Singh, DGP P K Thakur and others.

Calling for a fearless environment for the people, the chief minister said the state government would not let policemen experience lack of resources as they would be provided with modern facilities. According to Bihar Police data, there was 93,358 cognizable offences between January and June this year.

This includes 1,765 murders, 593 rapes, 3029 kidnappings and 32 kidnappings for ransom, 283 dacoities, 804 robberies, 6,604 cases of rioting and over 11,000 thefts.

Bihar had witnessed 1.85 lakh cognizable offences in the calendar year 2013. These included 3,441 murders, 1,128 rapes, 5,506 kidnappings and 70 kidnappings for ransom, 579 dacoities, 1521 robberies, 11,931 cases of rioting and over 21,000 thefts.

The data maintained by the Bihar Police also reveals that the number of cognizable offences including heinous crimes have registered a sharp increase in the state since 2011.
