Sonia Gandhi writes to Sumitra Mahajan seeking 'Opposition' status
In her letter, Sonia Gandhi said that there was no rule of 10 percent strength in the House. "As the largest opposition party, Congress deserves the post of Leader of the Opposition," she wrote.
According to experts, the opposition needs to have atleast 54 seats in a House of 543 to be nominated the status of the Opposition. But Congress in this case has only 44 seats.
Sonia wrote that if the Speaker grants the staus of Oppostion to Congress, Mallikarjun Kharge would be the Leader of Opposition.Mahajan as of now has not replied to the letter.
This is however not the first time that the House doesn not have a Leader Of Opposition. The House did not have a Leader of the Opposition in the first five Lok Sabhas between 1952 and 1977.
