This is what Sonia's letter to the 62-year-old Basamma said:
Dear Mrs Basamma
It was extremely painful to learn the horrible experience that 10 of our brave jawans engaged in protecting the country had in an avalanche in Siachen. Yet, the news about the recovery of your son Lance Naik Hanumanthappa gave us some hope in this hour. It is never enough to praise our soldiers who stay in as adverse conditions as in Siachen to protect their motherland.
My earnest prayer to God is to see a quick recovery of the committed soldier so that he can resume his normal life and return to his service to the nation.
I once again wish a speedy recovery and long life for Lance Naik Hanumanthappa.
Yours truly,
