Sania Mirza meets PM Modi after US Open title win

New Delhi, Sept 12: Ace Indian tennis player Sania Mirza on Friday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi after winning the mixed doubles title at the US Open last week. Mirza bagged her third Grand Slam title at the Flushing Meadows with Brazil's Bruno Soares.

PM Modi congratulated Mirza, No. 5 doubles player in the world, after she won her title and the latter thanked him for his support and encouragement. Mirza was accompanied by her mother Naseema Mirza during her meeting with the prime minister.

"Indian tennis player and winner of the 2014 US Open Mixed Doubles Event, Ms Sania Mirza, called on the Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, today," a PIB release said.

PM Modi tweeted after Mirza's win, saying: "Congratulations to Sania Mirza for the victory in the US Open Mixed Doubles Finals. We are very proud of the achievement."

In reply, the 27-year-old tennis player said: "Thank you very much sir...Look forward to meeting you at your convenience in the near future."
