PM Narendra Modi speaks to foreign dignitaries in Hindi
Heads of the state of six heads of the state and Mauritius, who attended the prime minister's swearing-in ceremony on May 26, met him the following day. The secretaries present at the meetings translated Modi's words into English for the guests to understand.
This is something which has alerted political observers. According to them, Modi has tried to assert India's national identity in South Asia through the use of Hindi. Heads of several countries in the world interact with others in their indigenous language and by speaking to the representatives of the neighbouring states in the national language, Modi too played the nationalist card. This is also an indirect message to China who spares no effort to dominate this region whenever there is an opportunity to do so.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the first BJP prime minister, was also known for his oratory skills in India and also spoke in Hindi at international forums.
