Modi will be the first prime minister to visit Siachen in nine years. The last prime minister to visit the area was Manmohan Singh in 2005.

The last time an Indian PM went to Siachen was in 2005

The Siachen Glacier in the Karakoram Range of the Himalayas is the world's highest and coldest battlefield where both Indian and Pakistani troops are stationed throughout the year. There have been calls to demilitarise the zone owing to high costs of maintaining the posts and also the threatening weather conditions.

India and Pakistan have been engaged in a stand-off on Siachen since 1984.
