New Delhi, Aug 11: The Delhi High Court on Thursday rejected two petitions which sought cancellation of interim bail granted to Jawaharlal Nehru University Student's Union President, Kanaihya Kumar. The court had heard at length both the petitions filed before it and had reserved orders in this regard.

Kumar who was arrested on sedition charges was granted bail. The two separate petitions filed by two individuals Prashant Kumar Umrao and Vineet Jindal sought cancellation of Kumar's bail on the ground that his speech after his release was "anti-national" and violated the bail condition.

During the hearing the Delhi government stated that it did not want to cancel the interim bail granted, while the Delhi police submitted that Kumar had violated two of his bail conditions. However, the police left it up to the court to take a final call.

In February, Kumar was arrested on charges of sedition after anti-India slogans were raised at the JNU during a protest meeting.

The protest meeting was held in memory of Afzal Guru, the terrorist who was hanged after being convicted in the Parliament attack. A case of sedition against several students was registered under IPC Sections 124A (sedition), 120B (criminal conspiracy) and 34 (acts done by several persons with a common intention).
