Pak high commission staffer detained for espionage, released

The official was said to be in possession of documents relating to defence and he was set to pass on the same

New Delhi, Oct 27: The Delhi Police has arrested an officer in the Pakistan High Commission on charges of espionage. The officer was said to be in possession of documents relating to defence. The officer has been identified as Mehmood Akhtar.

The Intelligence Bureau, which had kept tabs on him, reported the same to the Delhi Police. Following his arrest, he has been taken to the Chanakyapuri police station for further questioning.

The officer was questioned and then released because of diplomatic immunity. He will be deported to Pakistan in the next 24 hours.

Sources tell OneIndia that the documents found on him were incriminating in nature. There were details relating to the defence. He had allegedly gathered information for the past couple of months and was set to pass on the same.

The details relating to the defence comes at a time when there is extreme tension along with the border.

The officer also said that he will be questioned by a team of the Delhi police and the Intelligence Bureau. "We are in the process of ascertaining the extent of information he had gathered. Further we will get information from him about his local contacts from where he has been sourcing the information," the officer has said.

In this connection, the Pakistan High Commissioner, Abdul Basit has been summoned by the external affairs ministry. The meeting is scheduled to be held at 11.30 am on Thursday.
