NDTV approached the Supreme Court on Monday challenging the one-day ban imposed by the union government on its Hindi channel NDTV India. The information and broadcasting ministry had passed an order prohibiting transmission of NDTV India for one day.
The ministry had asked for NDTV India to be taken off air on November 9. With two days to go for the 1 day ban to be implemented, NDTV sought legal recourse before the Supreme Court.
Action against the channel was initiated after the inter-ministerial committee observed that NDTV India had violated rule 6(1)(p) of the cable television networks (regulation) act. The committee had recommended that the channel be banned for a day for dispersing sensitive information during reportage of Pathankot attack in January earlier this year.
