Murder charges dropped against accused in Nido Taniam's case
CBI took charge of the case two months ago and has now dropped the murder charge pressed by the Delhi Police and said that the culprits will face charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder, illegal confinement and offences under the SC/ST Atrocities Act.
CBI said that the assault that took place on Taniam was not premediated.
Taniam was studying in New Delhi and on the night of the ill-fated incident he asked shopkeepers for directions to his friend's house, when they laughed and humiliated him. Following this the locals got into a fight with Taniam.
Taniam died the next day in his residence. Post mortem results had shown that he had died of head and facial injuries cause by a blunt object. Taniam's death had sparked off many protests across the country.
