Family history- Dr Hashvardhan was born to Late Om Prakash Goyal and Sneha Lata and belongs to the Bania community. Hardhvardhan is married to Nutan and has two sons and a daughter.
He grew up in Delhi and attended school there. He has a bachelors degree in medicine and bachelor's degree in surgery from Shankar Vidhyarthi Memorial Medical College in Kanpur. He is an ENT surgeon and practises in Delhi. He is fondly known as 'Doctor Saab' in the political circuit.
Political career- Harshvardhan was a member of the RSS for 35 years and has been an active BJP member. He was elected in 1993 from Krishna Nagar consitituency for the Delhi Assembly election from BJP and became a member of the First Legislative Assembly in Delhi.
He has held many portfolios such as Health Minister, Law Minister in the Delhi Government. He also became the Minister of Education in 1996. When he was the Health Minister, he spearheaded the Polio Eradication Plan, which was successful in the state and was later adopted throughout the country.

Harshvardhan was then re-elected in 1998 and 2003. He was again victorius from the same seat in 2008 again. For the Delhi Assembly elections in 2013, he was named the party's chief ministerial candidate amidst much controversy.
He was also embroiled in a controversy when his opponent former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit said that a maid was raped in Harshvardhan's official residence. Harshvardhan however refuted all the allegations and said that he is innocent and these rumours were a lie.
Harshvardhan will be contesting the 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Chandni Chowk constituency against Congress's Kapil Sibal and AAP's Ashutosh.
