This incident took place at around 9:30 am on Tuesday after a man walking past the dumping yard behind the NTPC compound saw some dogs digging out a human body from beneath a heap of ash. The man then drew the attention of some CISF personnel passing through the area.
The police were also informed and a Police Control Room van took the body to a mortuary where it will be kept for 72 hours for identification purposes.
The victim still has not been identified. There are injury marks on her face and neck. Police suspect she was beaten up before being strangled to death. "The reason behind her death and whether she was sexually assaulted will only be ascertained after the autopsy report is out," said a police officer.
The body was dumped in a shallow pit. "The woman appeared to be married and was likely in her twenties. She was wearing a saree and blouse and had bangles in both her hands," said the officer.
Considering the extent to which the body had decomposed, it appeared she was killed about two days ago. The physical assault appeared to have been directed at her face as it bore the marks of brutal injury.
A murder case has been registered at Jaitpur police station.
