Currency ban: Railways witnesses 1000% rise in ticket booking

New Delhi, Nov 11: The Railways has alerted its vigilance department after it witnessed 1000 per cent booking for AC class tickets. This comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi demonetised Rs 500 and Rs 1000 notes earlier this week.

Modi, however, said that the notes will be accepted at railways stations and airports across the country. Following the announcement, there was a surge in booking of AC-I Class tickets.

1000% rise in railways AC bookings

According to reports, agencies now suspect that black money hoarders are behind this sudden increase of ticket bookings.

The vigilance department of the railways has taken precautionary steps to thwart the motives of black money hoarders. The railways has decided to limit the number of wait list tickets in the AC-I and AC-II classes.

Meanwhile, other departments like the catering and pantry cars have been asked to maintain a detailed report while accepting Rs 500 and Rs 1000 so that the person can be identified.

Several counters at the airports too witnessed a sales in tickets after the announcement.

In a surprise decision, Modi had on Tuesday night announced withdrawal of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 rupee notes from circulation in a bid to flush out black money.
