New Delhi, Oct 17: The extortion racket was being carried out on the directions of AAP MLA Gulab Singh, the police have said. Singh who is charge of AAP's Gujarat affairs surrendered before the Surat police on Sunday after a non-bailable warrant was issued against him.

In September two property dealers, Rinku Diwan and Deepak Sharma had complained that they were being threatened. They said that two people- Satish and Devender who work in Singh's office had threatened them and also tried to extort money. The police filed a case of extortion under Section 384 of the Indian Penal Code.

AAP MLA kingpin in extortion racket

The Joint Commissioner of Police, Southwestern Range, Dependra Pathak said that Singh is the kingpin. The entire racket was being run on his instructions, Pathak also said. He also said that four of his associates were already arrested.

There is enough evidence to suggest that Singh was running this syndicate the officer also said.

It is alleged that the accused people would identify illegal constructions by filing RTI applications. They would then call such builders and demand money from them, investigations have also revealed.

They would tell the builders that if they did not cough up the money, they would take action against them.

AAP, has however, reacted strongly on this issue. Singh is the 15th MLA from AAP to be arrested. Singh said that the police had searched his office and found nothing concrete.

Delhi Chief Minister, Arvind Kejriwal said that the case is a fabricated one and has been filed because the BJP government is scared.
