New Delhi, Feb 15: Two-hundred and fifty-three villages across the country were electrified in the week between February 8 and 14, 2016, under Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana, a Ministry of Power's Press Information Bureau (PIB) release said on Monday (Feb 15).
Out of these 253 villages, 111 are in Odisha, 81 in Assam, 40 in Jharkhand, 13 in Rajasthan, four in Bihar, three in Madhya Pradesh and one in Uttar Pradesh, the PIB release said.

The release said in view of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day address, the government has taken up the work of electrifying the remaining 18,452 villages by May 1, 2018. The strategy "consists of squeezing the implementation schedule to 12 months and also dividing village electrification process in 12 Stage milestones with defined timelines for monitoring", it said.
Over 5,270 villages have been electrified in the 2015-16 fiscal till date. Of the remaining 13,173 villages, 9,228 are to be electrified through grid, 3,368 to be electrified through off-grid where grid solutions are out of reach because of geographical reasons and 547 are to the electrified by the state governments.
