Mumbai, Dec 14: The Maharashtra government has decided to accord the status of adventure sports to Dahi Handi, the game which is played every year on the occasion of Janmashtami, the birthday of Lord Krishna, an India Today report said.
State education and sports minister Vinod Tawde made the announcement in the ongoing Assembly session in Nagpur on Friday.
In Dahi Handi, people form a pyramid to reach out to a buttermilk-filled earthen pot suspended at a height and break it. Recently, the Bombay High Court said that only people aged above 18 could participate in Dahi Handi celebrations because of the risk factor associated with it.
Tawde said Dahi Handi is a traditional sports in Maharashtra and the government aims to make it a safe affair by formulating new rules. He also said that the participants would be properly trained and made to use safety instruments. He said the BJP government in Maharashtra wants to make Dahi Handi an international sport as well.
