Aditya Thackeray, Mayor push for 24x7 nightlife in Mumbai
According to reports, despite opposition from many, Thackeray along Mayor Sunil Prabhu and other sena leaders will approach the state government with the proposal for 24x7 nightlife.
According to his proposals, eateries and other commercial establishments must be allowed to function at night. However this has not gone down well with the civic activists and Opposition parties in the civic house, who are against the proposals.
Thackeray, in his defence said that if the city were to function 24x7, it will be a win-win situation and will be for the city's welfare. He will be meeting the chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and will request him to accept the proposal.
"If the eateries and other establishments are kept open till late night, malls too could be kept open 24x7," he said. He added saying that this could fetch additional revenue for the civic and state coffers.
Thackeray says crimes among youth will reduce if Mumbai has 24x7 nightlife
He also made a strong point that the proposal was mainly for non-residential areas. "If restaurants and shops in residential zones want to keep open, they would need consent from 70 percent of the residents in the locality and also the local police stations's nod," he said.
Addressing security issues he said that he was aware of it and asked the people to start trusting. "If the restaurants and eateries are open, it will increase employment and restaurants will have to hire people for double shifts. This in turn will reduce crime among youth," he said.
However many members of the civil society oppose this move and say that security of senior citizens, women and others must be taken into account before implementing such a proposal.
