The leader landed his own party in trouble recently after he praised his cousin Rahul Gandhi, the vice-president of the Congress, for his work in Amethi, his constituency and the latter acknowledged his praise. The BJP has fielded Smriti Irani against Rahul Gandhi from this seat and Varun Gandhi's words were seen to be a major embarrassment for the opposition party. Varun later clarified his stand on micro-blogging site Twitter but a red-faced BJP tried to play down the matter. Even his mother Maneka Gandhi, another BJP MP, reprimanded him for not being careful while speaking.
