Lucknow, April 1: April 1, which is widely known as April Fools Day, is turning out to be a day of shocking sexist comments from the Indian politicians.

After a sexist comment from Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, then a racist comment from BJP MP and MoS Giriraj Singh, an MLA from the ruling-Samajwadi Party has also joined the brigade of politicians, who are talking nonsense about women.

Shiv Charan Prajapati, an SP MLA from Hamirpur was on Wednesday, April 1, addressing a women's meet, when he blamed women for rapes, by saying, "women are more responsible for rapes", drawing strong condemnation from opposition parties.

"...it is wrong to say that women are less guilty, they are more responsible for rapes," he said.

Prajapati also said women were also no less responsible for crimes like abortion and dowry harassment. He said no government can check incidents like rapes. "Only society can do it," he added.

When UP Women's Commission Chairperson Zarina Usmani, who was presiding over the meeting, objected to his remarks, the MLA said, "If I have said something wrong, I seek pardon."

There was no immediate reaction to the SP MLA's remarks from his party.

Congress leader Akhilesh Pratap Singh slammed Prajapati, asking how the SP MLA could make such insensitive comments.

BJP spokesman Vijay Bahadur said lawmakers should execise caution while making comments failing which it will encourage the wrongdoers.

However, the trend of blaming women for rapes is not new for Samajwadi Party leaders.

In the past, SP Supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav and other veteran leaders of his party have publicly made such disgraced and sexist comments against women.

In April 2014, Mulayam had courted controversy when he was addressing a gathering, "Ladkon se aisi galtiyan ho jaati hain to iska ye matlab nahin ki phaansi de di jaye (Boys do make such mistakes but that does not mean that they should be sent to the gallows)."

Death penalty for rape is unfair...will change rape laws when we come to power," he had said. [Mulayam Singh Yadav not sorry for controversial rape remark]

Earlier in the day, controversial BJP leader from Bihar, Giriraj Singh made appalling comments against the Congress President Sonia Gandhi.
