UP: 3 boys sell blood to buy smartphone; blood bank sealed

Lucknow, Aug 9: It seems that possessing smartphones and the latest modern gadgets have become a way of life for today's generations. Those who can afford, change their phones frequently, but those who cannot afford, find bizarre ways to fund money.

Recently, three teenagers in Chowk area of Lucknow went to the extent of selling their blood for buying a smartphone! The three teenagers went to Kohli Pathology to donate blood.

On Friday, Aug 7, health officials conducted a raid in which it was found out that the three teenagers were not medically fit to donate blood.

The raiding officials found out that all three teenagers were under-age and their hemoglobin levels were below 12.

The blood banks was sealed and three persons were arrested in the case, a news report said.

One of the 14-year-old teenager was quoted saying as, "I have been saving money for some time to buy a cell phone. When an agent from the blood bank told me that I could earn some extra money, I couldn't resist."

He reportedly works as a salesboy at a garment showroom and manages to earn Rs 2,000 per month. His mother earns Rs 3,000 a month and his father had passed away fours ago.

In Rs 5,000, they have to feed five people including his two siblings and grandmother.

Another teenager, a Class 9th dropout, revealed that he donated blood for the third time, due to financial problems. He said that donating blood gives him enough "pocket money."

The identities of three teenagers was not revealed.
