Uttar Pradesh police earlier had informed that they would arrest Som on Saturday. But the BJP MLA surrendered himself before the cops take any action. Som earlier had challenged police to arrest him.
Som was accused of circulating a "fake" video which allegedly had triggered riot in Muzaffarnagar and adjoining area. The video, which reportedly was shot either in Pakistan or in Afghanistan, was circulated through social networking sites saying it was shot in Uttar Pradesh.
Som was arrested shortly after he surrendered in Meerut
Som, the second BJP legislator who was arrested on Saturday, was arrested shortly after he surrendered in Meerut. Before surrendering, Som rejected allegations hurled against him saying, "I did not upload the video. My office boys shared it. I came to know and removed it in five minutes."
The controversial video claimed to show the lynching of two Hindu Jat boys; the footage was actually two years old and from Pakistan, the police have said.
Som also accused the UP government of targeting BJP leaders. "I will tell the Chief Minister that he is young he should stop playing partisan politics and try and be equal to all communities," he said.
