Congress president Sonia Gandhi files nomination at Rae Bareli

Rae Bareli, April 2: Congress president Sonia Gandhi thanked the voters of Rae Bareli, from where she has won three parliamentary elections on the trot, after filing her nomination for the upcoming election. She was accompanied by son and party vice-president Rahul Gandhi during her visit to the collector's office. Her vehicle was showered with flower petals as she reached Rae Bareli to file her papers.

Rahul Gandhi, when asked about his cousin Varun Gandhi's praise that he has done "good work" in Amethi, replied that the latter was right in his observation. He said the Congress has done strategic work in Amethi by planning education hub and for the farmers. Varun, a BJP candidate from Sultanpur in Uttar Pradesh, was reportedly taken aback after he was told about Rahul's appreciation of his views.

Rahul said Varun was right in his observation, putting the latter in a spot

Later, Varun Gandhi clarified his remarks on Twitter, saying he had heard that some decent work was happening in Amethi though he did not see it himself and his views were not to endorse any political party or its candidate.

The BJP has fielded Smriti Irani from Amethi to challenge Rahul Gandhi.
