What about the suicide threat of 1996, Kunal Ghosh returns Mamata's barbs
Kolkata, Nov 22: Suspended Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kunal Ghosh on Friday mocked party supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at the CBI court here on the issue of committing suicide.
Ghosh, who is currently in jail in connection to the Saradha chit fund scam that has taken the entire nation by storm, allegedly attempted suicide inside the jail by consuming sleeping pills in the wee hours of November 13. Three days before that, he openly threatened in a court to kill himself if the authorities failed to catch the real culprits within 72 hours.
Banerjee later mocked Ghosh, saying suicide is a crime, both socially and legally and also mocked his bid to commit suicide, saying he who consumed the pills himself is revealing it.
In his turn, Ghosh said on Friday that some people are saying committing suicide is a crime. "Then was the threat to commit suicide at Gopalnagar not a crime," he asked.
In 1996, Banerjee threatened to kill herself to protest tainted poll candidates
The target was clearly the chief minister. It was in April 1996 when Banerjee, then a Congress MP, threatened to commit suicide at Gopalnagar area to protest the party's decision to field four 'anti-socials' in the assembly election held that year. Banerjee put a shawl around her neck in full public view and said she would pull it to kill herself, an ABP report said.
What is worse, one of those four persons who Banerjee opposed during her 'self-threatening protest' is an MP of the Trinamool Congress now, the ABP report added.
