Kolkata bridge collapse: FIR filed against builder, say TV reports
Kolkata, March 31: A massive girder of a flyover in Jorashanko area in North Kolkata collapsed on Thursday afternoon, killing at least 24 people. An FIR was filed against the builders of the structure.
Around 300 jawans of the Army along with policemen and local people were engaged in the rescue operation, which allegedly began much later. Several vehicles, including a minibus, were trapped under the debris even after several hours.
Blood and severed parts of bodies were found scattered in the spot of the accident.
A number of heavyweight politicians, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who reached the US on Wednesday night, also expressed his concern in a tweet and asked the government to take all possible measures to help those in distress.
The moment when the under-construction bridge collapsed was captured in a CCTV camera installed nearby. It showed the massive structure coming down on people and vehicles passing underneath.
