Trinamool Congress supporters took out a rally on Saturday protesting Mitra's arrest. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee also participated in the show of protest. On Friday, Banerjee said Mitra's arrest was unconstitutional and slammed the CBI and BJP government at the Centre, accusing them of playing out a political game against her party.
TMC supporters clashed with police personnel outside the court when Mitra was being taken there. Media persons were also roughed up during the clash.
Meanwhile, the city was paralysed by rallies taken out by the TMC and Opposition Left which demanded interrogation of the chief minister in connection to the Saradha scam.
Leader of Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra said never in the history of Bengal had any minister been arrested on charges of corruption. "The chief minister should also be interrogated," he said.
