Mukherjee said the reaction that happened after the MP got slapped was normal. "We didn't bring people from Ramakrishna Mission or Bharat Sevasram. There were people from various corners," a local channel showed the minister as saying when asked about the severe retaliation on Acharya.

Another state minister Firhad Hakim said the act was caused by some opposition party and also blamed the media.

CPI(M) leader and advocate Bikash Ranjan Bhattarcharjee offered legal assistance to the injured student.

BJP leader and in-charge Siddharth Nath Singh said internal rift in the ruling Trinamool Congress was beginning to surface and the latest slapping incident and the after-effect were also part of that.

Four cases were registered under the Indian Penal Code against Acharya.
