Ghosh, who threatened to kill himself a few days ago, consumed 51 sleeping pills in the wee hours of Friday, said a suicide note found in his cell later. He was admitted to the CCU in SSKM Hospital here in a critical condition where he was responding to the treatment, local media reported. His stomach had been washed out.
CBI officials were set to meet Ghosh in the hospital on Friday, reports said.
Forty-six-year-old Ghosh, a journalist-turned-politician, was the chief of the Saradha Group's media operations and the only TMC leader named in the CBI's first charge-sheet in the scam. Ghosh has been targetting his own party, including its chief and chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee over the chit fund scam that saw several people losing their lifelong savings.
The scam is being probed both in Bengal and Odisha.
Ghosh threatened to commit suicide if action was not taken against the culprit
On Monday, Ghosh said in a city court that if action was not taken against those involved in the scam and he was not granted bail within 72 hours, then he would commit suicide.
Ghosh also pointed out that what he had said to the CBI during questioning did not feature in the CBI's chargesheet.
"I am giving three days time. If action is not taken against those involved in the case or if I am not granted bail, I will commit suicide," the MP said.
